âLate again, Samantha?â Miss Chimney raised her eyebrows.
âOur refrigerator broke and Mom yelled âSave the sour cream!â so Dad put the air conditioner in my room because itâs the smallest.â Samantha sighed. âAll the food from the fridge went under my bed. I was up all night freezing. Iâm sorry Iâm late.â
âIâm sorry that you didnât bring your air conditioner with you.â Miss Chimney mopped her brow.
Tatamagouche was having a record-breaking heat spell. The weatherman had said it was hotter than an oven in âH E double hockey sticks.â
Pourquoi was the only one not bothered. He lounged in front of Miss Chimneyâs desk sucking and slurping and munching on a mango pit. Butterbum watched from above. She stretched herself out like a Slinky, trying to keep her bum in the middle of the desk as she gripped the edge with her front paws and peered down at Pourquoi. These were their assigned spots. Butterbum now spent most of her days on top of the teacherâs desk because Miles found out that guinea pigs were originally from the Andes. Also, Pourquoi had run her over thirteen times since the beginning of school. And since the beginning of school, Pourquoi didnât care where he sat, even if it was on Butterbum.
âSince the temperature is at the boiling point,â said Miss Chimney, looking at her new giant thermometer that bubbled like a lava lamp, âand most of you are more wilted than yesterdayâs lettuce, I think we should read some cold books.â
Ninaâs hand shot up. âI know one. Itâs called What Happens When the Light Goes Off â The Inside Story of the Fridge.â
âOh, yes, Nina, Iâve read that one. I love mysteries that make you all shivery, but I was thinking more along the lines of history. Iâve got some excellent books on the Ice Age. And I have them all prepared for you.â Miss Chimney lugged a large blue cooler that was covered in white icicles from the cloakroom. She used a hammer and chisel to remove the lid. Icy mist squirted from the sides. âDig in!â She flopped into her chair and fanned herself.
Miles was the first one to grab a frosty book. When he tried to open it his fingers stuck to the cover. He blew hot breath on his hands and only succeeded in thawing the title, The Iceman Cometh. Miles went back to his seat to wait.
Erik tripped Miles as he went by. âWatch your step, stupid?â he muttered. Erik covered his hands with his sleeves and grabbed a big book he planned to throw at Pugh. Erik licked his book to see if his tongue would freeze to it. Then he had to visit Nurse Payne in her office so she could use her blow-dryer and a paint scraper borrowed from Mr. Drum, the janitor, to free Erikâs tongue from Trapped In Ice. Everyone said that was the closest Erik was ever going to get to having his nose stuck in a book.
